A Tip From Wally Wood

February 18th, 2010 | by Crusader
Posted In: 3, Heroes inc. BLOG, Heroes inc.BLOG

No update today as you can see. Something super urgent has come up and I need to put my energy into that.

But in the meanwhile I’d like to share a little tip to all you creators out there.

Wally Wood’s 22 Panels That Always Work.

They’re a series of panel styles that Wally Wood made for himself back in the 70′s to prevent artistic block.  To keep things looking fresh. They’re basically every type of panel you ever need.  It’s been floating around for decades and when I ran into it a few years ago I immediately saved it.  It’s printed out and pinned on my wall.  I keep it there more as a reminder to change things around than as referance. I’m pretty sure that’s what Mr. Wood did too.

This might be old news to a lot of you, but I’m sure that quite a few haven’t even heard of it and will find it useful.  One of our readers (Zatoichi) brought it up in the comment section and I thought it was worth mentioning in the blog.

So here you are.  Just click the image, wait for the window to open and right click and save as.

Comicbreak!!

February 3rd, 2010 | by Crusader
Posted In: 3, Heroes inc. BLOG, Heroes inc.BLOG

I had a great experience with Comicbreak, that I’d like to share with you.  I bought myself some trade paperbacks as a Christmas present. Under NO circumstances would I buy them here in Finland!! A typical trade costs around 35€ ($48) here!  So online was the way to go. There’s lots of comic book  services out there.  Probably the biggest, most popular being Discount Comic Book Service (DCBS for short ;-) ) For guys like me on the other side of the globe, they’re a blessing.  I was originally going to order some books from DCBS because the guys over at ComicgeekSpeak are always talking about it.

But then one of their podcast episodes was sponsored by a “newcomer”  called Comicbreak. I went to check it out and was really happy with it. Like DCBS they also have lots of discounts and they have they’re site setup with things you see in a comic book store. Everything from a 99 cent bin to comic sets. You get 30% off pre-orders, up to 20% off subscriptions, free bags and boards!!, free shipping for orders over $75 and tons of other stuff.

But onto my happy experience… So I chose to go with Comicbreak because, though I absolutely have nothing against the guys at DCBS, I really want to encourage the “little man”, the “newcomers”,  because a lot of you know how it is to make it out there.  I ordered five trade paperbacks: The Death of Captain America: vol.1-3, Captain America: The Man With No Face and Wildcats: Street Smart.  I calculated that they’d be here just in time for Christmas.  But then I got an email from them saying that all of the comics had come in, but that one of the Cap tradebacks was damaged. I sent an email back saying that I understood and that it was unfortunate, because I was really looking forward to some Christmas reading since these books are hard to get here.   But that’s the way things go sometimes. Thanked them for contacting me and went on with Cristmas preperation.

Then two days later I get another email telling me to hang on, they’ll send all of the books, damaged one too, so I can get started on my reading and then  send the un-damaged book later!  At first I didn’t know what to say.  You DEFINATELY don’t get that kind of customer service here.  All I could do was thank them from the bottom of my heart.

So it goes without saying, that I really suggest you check out Comicbreak.  For people living in the US it’s great but for us living abroad it’s even better! If you’re worried about shipping, remember: Orders over $75 are shipped for free.  Even to us guys N gals overseas. And for orders under $75 I think it’s possible to get a flat rate envelope, which costs a little over $12 (if I remember correctly)

Like I said at the beginning of this post: comics cost an arm and a leg here.  I don’t know how it is in  other countries, but there’s no way that I could have bought those books here.  I did some searching to see what they would have cost. It would have cost me a whopping 175€ !! That’s around $243 for five trades! 8O Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? Well, now you know why I chose Comicbreak. ;-)

Check them out!

Noise on the site? Still Hacked?

January 28th, 2010 | by Crusader

I’ve been getting emails from people saying that the site is playing music and noise…! I don’t hear it on my computer or on our laptop so I was just wondering how many people hear stuff on the  Heroes, inc site?

Obviously there is some kind of hacking still going on.  Someone has a soft spot for Heroes, inc. it seems… :-(

That’s right. Some greasy little scumbag has planted his code into the site.  So if you’re seeing this you’re lucky.  Google has RedFlagged  Heroes,  inc. and scare everyone off.   unhappy smileys

I’m trying now to get things cleaned up and salvaged. Finding all of the little buggers is not fun.

The Future of Heroes,inc.

January 14th, 2010 | by Crusader
Posted In: 3, Heroes inc. BLOG, Heroes inc.BLOG

I’ve never made it a secret, that Heroes, inc. is more than just a hobby to keep me busy.  I love comics and I love to draw and write, so creating my own comic was only natural.  So far I think that Heroes, inc. has constantly gone in the right direction.  Just by looking at the reader statistics, I know that I’m not the only one who thinks that.

However… the whole plan of gaining interest with your webcomic then branching out to selling the actual magazine… well, easier said than done. It’s been a great year, which in webcomic time isn’t very long, I know, but… I think there are many reason for the lack of it’s success. A big one is that it’s impossible for me to hit the Cons with Heroes, inc.  Comic Conventions are one of indie creators’ biggest income (or so I’ve heard) Not just selling the book, but all the other merchandise. Gettinfg a table at Artist Alley.  Not even being on the same continent is kind of a monnkey wrench :-? So…

…It’s time to shop Heroes, inc. around the various publishers.   As we speak I’m trying to write a compact, but info filled synopsis of the whole series. Holy cow! What a job! Doing the pitch is easy. It’s short and to the point. Basically the same as in the ABOUT page.  But the series concept synopsis… whoo boy! Trying to get all the stuff that sets Heroes, inc. apart from other comics, but at the same time keep it to the point, interesting and SHORT is quite an undertaking!

I’ve made a list of publishers that I personally like and wouldn’t mind seeing Heroes, inc published at. If anyone out there has any suggestions, bring them on.  I’m open to all. The first that comes to mind is, of course, IMAGE.  I’m also looking at APE ENTERTAINMENT and ARCHAIA STUDIOS.  I would have liked to try out RED FIVE COMICS, but they’e stated that their not looking for super heroes right now. I also would have tried DYNAMITE, but they’re using the same public domain characters so I don’t think that would work out.

Now many of you are probably going “Well that’s just great! He’s cashing in. Right in the middle of the story too…!”

DON’T WORRY! HEROES,INC. ISN’T GOING ANYWHERE!!  We’ll update at a minimum of once a week.  I know that most of you would rather have the twice a week (even better three times a week) schedule in full color, but unfortunately… not easy to pull off.  Don’t forget the RSS feed, if checking back once a week is too much of a hassle.

I’ll keep you posted on the progress and more than likely I’ll have the trade paperback up for sale (hopefully in January *gulp*) before I get any interest from publishers, so look for that.

Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

January 11th, 2010 | by Crusader

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

-Margaret Mead

Monday, January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. To participate, we formed the Comic Creator’s Alliance–a group of over eighty comic book creators (both web and print) who volunteered our artistic talents to raise money and awareness for this cause. You may not know it, but there are currently 27 million enslaved people worldwide- more than double the number of enslaved Africans during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. UNICEF estimates that 1.2 million children every year are sold into slavery, most of it sexual. The US Department of Justice estimates 16,000 victims of human trafficking are brought into the United States every year. Unlike slavery in the 19th century, what is happening today is happening in secret. So it won’t end until awareness is raised, and people like you and me take a stand.

So here’s what we did: each creator contributed an original drawing of one of our own female characters, and combined them into a single wallpaper image ( available in  color and monochrome).  Besides Diana the wallpaper features characters from The Phoenix Requiem, Girls with Slingshots, Earthsong, Looking for Group, Shadowgirls, The Uniques and four IDW Publishing titles: Fallen Angel, The Dreamland Chronicles, Love & Capes, and The Dreamer and lots, lots more!  Donate today to download this unique, once-in-a-lifetime wallpaper. The Donations Drive will last for two weeks, from January 11th – 24th. All proceeds will be split evenly between Love146 and Gracehaven House- two organizations working on rehabilitation of victims and prevention of this crime.

What I'm Reading: Watchmen Issue#1

January 7th, 2010 | by Crusader
Posted In: 3, Heroes inc. BLOG, Heroes inc.BLOG

Watchmen-01-title

As said many times before, Heroes, inc. is quite often compared to The Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.  I’ve known of The Watchmen for a long time. The now classic smiley face with the drop of blood is something I remember seeing a lot.  I was never quite sure what the actual story was about though.  There was a superhero parody movie called The Mysterymen, which I  thought were the Minutemen from Watchmen and so mistakenly, thought that that was what it was.  So I never really bothered to read it.  I don’t even think it was available here, in Finland, until close to the movie was coming out. Watchmen 01 - 00

It wasn’t until the Watchmen movie was getting close that I started to look into it again.  When I read the synopsis of it online, I realized that there could be some overlapping ideas with Heroes, inc. (alternative history, aging superheroes etc.) so I found a few copies online to read through.

I think I got about issue five when I quit.  I read thought wikipedia for the rest of the story to make sure Heroes, inc. wasn’t treading to close to the Watchmen story.  Satisfied with the differances, I dropped it.

Now I’m making an effort to go through the WHOLE story.  Watchmen is praised to high heaven so often and so much that it’s time I see what exactly the whole hubbub is about.

So…

I’ll be going at this one issue at a time.  Take in mind that I haven’t read this to the end and though I know the basic story I don’t know all of the small details so NO SPOILERS BEYOND THIS ISSUE PLEASE!!!  I say that because from various conversations online I’ve gotten the feeling,  that there’s a lot that’s in the story now, things said or seen, that make sense later on.  Things that make you go “hang on!  let me go back to issue one and check that out”

So let’s get to it!

I’m sure there isn’t a whole lot of people who haven’t read The Watchmen, but I’m hoping there are at least a few out there who can share my ignorance.  The basic synopsis of issue #1 is this:

The story starts at the murder scene of Edward Blake.  Through the conversation of the investigating officers and flashbacks we learn that he was thrown through the window of his penthouse.  Also through the conversation of the detectives we learn that superheroes exsist.  But only the government approved ones (An idea later used a lot by Marvel)  Rorschach, one of the old superheroes  is a vigilante and continues without the government’s approval.

Watchmen 01 - 12That night Rorschach (he wears a mask with a Rorschach inkblot test on it) breaks into Blake’s apartment.  It turns out that Edward Blake was an old superhero known as The Comedian.

Jump to the orginal Owl, Hollis Mason now an old man and the  Owl that came after him Dan Dreiberg.  Hanging out at Mason’s house as Mason talks of the old days.  Dan makes his way home where Rorschach is waiting for him in his kitchen.  Rorschach informs him that there could possibly be someone going after old superheroes.

From there Rorschach goes to see Veidt, who is an ex-superhero now typical rich  guy with head up his… *ahem*…Then it’s off to a military reasearch center to see Dr. Manhattan (a blue… energy… godlike guy) and his girlfriend, Laurie Juspeczyk, a former superheroine. Rorschach informs them about the murder and his theory.

Through these various visits we learn that Edward Blake, The Comedian wasn’t a very pleasant guy and basically deserved what was coming.

Laurie meets up with Dan Dreiberg and we get the impression that she’s not quite happy where she is.  She’s pretty much kept around to keep Dr. manhattan happy it seems.

We end with some musings from Rorscach’s Journal.

Then there’s an outake from Hollis Mason’s (the original Owl) autobiography.  This is really fun stuff and gives a little backstory and “credibility” to things.  These bits at the back of Moore’s books are always interesting.

So far the story is intriguing.  It introduces the characters and gives you enough story to let you know that there’s a whole lot more going on.  Gibbons’ art is good.  It’s pretty basic eighties art.  The style and coloring brought back comicbook memories. :-)   One point worth bringing up and i’m not sure if this was all Alan Moore or did Dave Gibbons have any say, but the whole book is done with the 3×3 panel layout.  For those not in the know, that means three panels up and three across. Pretty hard to pull off these days with the widescreen and splash pages being popular. Watchmen 01 - 28

It’s easy to see why The Watchmen was thought of as such a revolutionary comic.  A typical reader of today’s comics might find it to be one cliché after the other, but one has to remember that this was made in 1985.  This is the original “template”.   Things like cinematic camera pans and angles,  the use of journals or diaries instead of typical captions, superheroes being considered vigilantes and made to register, superheroes growing old and retiring, superheroes being depressed, extenssive use of “silent” pages and of course Alan Moore’ trademark “backstories”.  And this just in the first issue.  We see all of those things everyday in comics without even thinking twice about them.  Back in 1985… not so much.  On the other hand I was only ten back then and mostly interested in who Spidey was going to punch this month. :-D

At this point I really liked Watchmen so picking up issue two goes without saying.  It wasn’t until a few issues in that I started to get bored.  We’ll see how far it holds up this time around.

What I'm Reading: Captain America Reborn no:5… Heroes, inc. influence?

January 2nd, 2010 | by Crusader
Posted In: 3, Heroes inc. BLOG, Heroes inc.BLOG

Cap Reborn 05003

I wrote about the Captain America Reborn mini series a while back. If you missed it you can read all about it here.

The mini series was intended to be five parts, but half way through writer Ed Brubaker (one of the best Marvel has) decided that he had more story to tell and that it would be six parts instead. So far we’ve seen Steve Rogers being thrown though time, going through important key points of his own life. Issue 5 takes a bit of a twist as he ends up in a alternative history, where the US has lost WWII and Nazis have invaded the U.S.A.

Cap Reborn 05006-007

Now, though I’m a big Captain America fan, I’m not an expert on his history, but I don’t remember this happening, so I wonder is this the extra stuff that Brubaker decided to add to the story.   I guess it’s just normal paranoia, that makes me wonder if somehow the storyline of Heroes, inc. (it was up in the ABOUT page for a long time) made it’s way back to the ears at Marvel and someone decided that “Hey that’s a cool idea…”  If so… COOL!! On the other hand,  Brubaker is, in my opinion, one of the best writers at Marvel so it seems kind of unlikely. My only hope is that it was just this one issue and not something they’ll go back to.  Because, even though Heroes, inc. was rolling around in my head years ago and  started back in March of 2009, Marvel is still Marvel.  They could come up with a story that’s years old tomorrow and it would still be considered the first.  We’ll see how the story unfolds.  I’m pretty sure that Rogers is going to end up as the new leader of S.H.I.E.L.D.

It’s like the old saying:  “Everything has been done before” :-)

This has got me thinking about influences and various ideas overlapping etc.  One of the stories that is brought up most by readers when discussing Heroes, inc. is “The Watchmen”.  I’ve made it no secret, that what I’ve read of Watchmen, didn’t  really grab me.  The “backstories” at the end of the issue were the best part.  I think I’ll have to try and get the whole series and do a bit in my “What I’m Reading” at sometime.

ashamed smileys

Actually… I just decided. I’m going to try and get my hands on the tradeback.  It’s about 40 euros here in Finland so we’ll see… I could go through it issue by issue in the Blog.  A lot of you have already read it so there could be some interesting discussions…

Let’s see… I have the first few issues in english so I could start right now.  Monday is the next update so it won’t be then, but maybe Tuesday or Wednesday.

So look for that.  This is going to be interesting.

Until then…

Human Trafficking Awareness.

December 10th, 2009 | by Crusader

diana-4-charity

Lora Innes, creator of The Dreamer, has started a charity project to help prevent Human Trafficking.  A shocking amount goes on in the world. Most of it is children and most is sexual slavery.  It makes me sick just to think of it.

My wife and I  have three children and things like this really scare me.

The idea behind Lora’s project is to gather as many comic creators as possible and have them submit a drawing of their female character.  Eventually all of the characters will be made into a wallpaper that will be sold for charity starting January 11th, which is Human Trafficking Awareness day in the US.

It’s an important cause so please check it out.

The long list of great creators participating is here.

What I'm Reading: Captain America-Reborn

November 29th, 2009 | by Crusader
Posted In: 3, Heroes inc. BLOG, Heroes inc.BLOG

Reborn

Just by taking a quick look at Heroes, inc. it’s easy to tell that I’m a Captain America fan.  Most of you are probably aware that the orginal Captain America was assasinated. For those of youa who aren’t in the know, it went like this:  Things were getting out of hand with superheroes. The citizens of the US were getting fed up with the constantcapassas superhero battles etc. A law was passed, that made it mandatory for heroes to register and thus having to reveal their real names. Of course a lot of the superheroes were against this. The old “protect your loved ones by keeping a secret identity” thing. Captain America, who’s identity wasn’t so secret since he basically worked for the government, was one of the ones against registration.

Long story short… lots of heroes battling heroes, which ended with Captain America being  arrested and put on trial. He was then assasinated on the courthouse steps.

After marvel pulled that off the WHOLE country if not the world talked about it. Many thought of it as Marvel making their own little protest against Bush and the way things were going back then.

Needles to say I, like many others, was shocked. But in a way I loved it.  Doing something so drastic with one of their main characters was great. Many weren’t phased at all because “No one EVER really dies in comics” has been seen over and over again.  Even though I am a huge Captain America fan I really hoped they would stick to it and keep him dead.

15_captain_america_600

Bucky as Captain America

Soon after Captain America died a new Captain America appeared. The big question was “Who is he?”  Rumors and speculation were flying all over the place. As most people guessed it was Bucky, Cap’s old sidekick.  Surprisingly people found themselves actually liking the new Captain America. Watching him settle into his new role, how other superheroes reacted to him etc.

But alas… no one ever really dies in comics.  I started reading the next series… Captain America: Reborn. The series is done by some top-notch guys: Ed Brubaker is writing while Bryan Hitch illustrates. Hitch’s pencils are always cool to look at and Brubaker is one of the best writers out there it’s just… WHY? Why bring the original Captain America, Steve Rogers, back? Well we know that there’s a movie coming out in 2011 so they had to bring him back, but the world has moved on.  We’ve accepted Bucky as the new Cap. This just drops the bottom right out of his death.  I know I’m not alone in saying that I’m really SICK of seeing these heroes come back from the dead. No matter how you explain it.  And the explanation is a doozy for this one. It’s obvious right off that Steve Rogers is lost in time!! He’s bouncing around going through his own life from event to event. “Let’s find a new way to tell this story for the thousandth time” It’s “Quantum Leap starring Captain America.  I’m sure there’s those, that are jumping for joy that Steve is back, but most  of those that I’Cap in actionve talked to are confused and a bit dissapointed. Even though deep down we all suspected he would come back sometime.  It just brought so much more realism (Hard to do with superheroes, yeah) that Cap was dead and the mantle passed on. Just like what’s going on in the DC univers with Batman. But now they’re talking about him coming back from the dead too. But thats another blogpost.

I won’t go too much into the story here even though there’s not to much to spoil. Steve jumps around  through his life. The Red Skull (surprise surprise is in the story) Brubaker comes up with some nice twists, that make you want to see how is this going to end, but it doesn’t stop the fact that… he’s coming back. At least unless they really plan on screwing with our minds and he dies again at the end of this series.  We’re only up to part four of the six issue series (originally intended to be five issues) so anything is possible. In theory at least.  But this being a Marvel series it’s pretty obvious we’re heading back to the status quo.

My only hope is they keep Bucky on as some form of Captain America. Doesn’t seem too likely they’ll have two, but we can always hope, right?
