Most times Lawrence takes the time to undress himself. (save the government money) I was going to have Spitz say “Am I supposed to afraid of a naked black man?”
Well, if you do the colouring, you can put some shreded parts of his uniform into the panel.
Ok, always a new uniform for Lawrence is expensive, but who cares, the effect pays it 1000times back.
Have nice flight, Herr Spitz.
(…and, he he he, this “elastic” slip is clever.)
The German super might well have simply said “Ein kleiner Schwarzer?”, leaving out “mann” entirely (implying a more racist attitude without actually using the more blatant “Neger”). Great comic, BTW!
As Regge said : If Spitz left the mann out of his speech it becomes more belittling. I do feel Neger could also have been used instead of schwarzer Mann if we take the Nazi stance on certain races into account.
Who would qualify for the German super program ? My first bet would be that they’d be drafted from the best of the SS.
I never actually played, I’ve just read it alot. The extensive background story and alt time line section is interesting.
The basic premise about where the powers come from is totally different though.
Here its man made, Godlike it is willpower vs reality. Which has very interesting implications….. not aware of an attack…..sorry ….invulnerability dont work. Thats not to say that there arent supers that break the mold, just that its rare….and generally a good indicator of the supers sanity. It was introduced with a very unique add series in Dragon mag…A series of interviews ( as cartoons )with the now not so famous( or admired ) anymore Invulnerable Man ( USA’s first super )about WWII and his super buddies.
Its a shame they’re not available at the publishers website since they added alot to the setting as background material.
Let’s see now, Archie is Superman-lite (no cheap invincibility), you wouldn’t like Lawrence when he gets angry, one (forget his name) shoots blue flames, and another has eagle characteristics.
Now I am REALLY curious about Boone’s powers, aside from the super healing factor.
FWIW, my first impression was of a large person shrinking (scanning from left to right as we usually read). At first I thought perhaps the german was shrinking. (Perhaps I was also reading the circular small panel before the shrinking panel.)
I suspect the colorized version will make it much more obvious. I expect the ripped clothes in the middle stage of growth will also be more visible and evident once it is colorized.
I also got the impression of shrinkage first but logic said that he was growing. I think that people changes sizes are usually drawn in a “forward” direction so their final size is in the front; i.e. if they grow the smaller figure is ‘behind’ the big one. But that would mean you have to draw a whole new frame, so I’d say you could just focus on doing a good job on colouring instead… =)
Nice with the color. Say, did there used to be an asterisk connecting the German to the translation, as on previous pages?
On a different note, it is interesting how one runs across convergences at times. Over at Yon Kuma, a melee fight just took a very similar direction, i.e. over and down in a very big way. SQUASH! and <BIG BOMB LEG DROP!
Kraut, not Crout, by the way.
Its Kraut btw, not crout. From sauerkraut.
I think that kraut is intentionally misspelled.
By the way, hooray for the kleiner schwarzer mann!! (how many uniforms he needs per week?)

He was in a bit of a hurry this time though…

I wasn’t quite sure what “term” germans would use back then. So a kind of sarcastic “little black man” seemed to fit.
Yeah, I suppose it does fit, if “man” is also considered a diminutive term…
Good call.
Checking various definitions it can be Kraut or crout from courkrout or sauerkraut. etc etc.
But Kraut seems to be the most common in the states so… changed.

Spitz seems to fit the poster image boy of the Arier too…..
Did you ever see the P&P RPG Godlike btw ?
Just Googled it. Sounds interesting. Too bad it’s a traditional RPG instead of a PC game… I would’ve liked to try it out.

The dice rolling mechanic is unique.

Boone’s powers…
I’m really saving that. It might end up biting me in the butt though. Some people will be surprised and others will just be “is that it?”.
We’ll see in a few more issues.
Oh and you forgot Diana. She has that same healing factor even though woman were’nt soldiers back then… How’d she end up with it?
Love that german’s expression. Goes from confidence to ” Aww S@#$.”
Lawrence must eat a heck of a lot of food to be able to pull that off.
Now with Diana getting her powers… Maybe they are transferable in certain ways?
Naw. Diana got her healing factor through the program like the rest of them, but why and how is interesting…
At the same time as Archie ?
Archie wasn’t supposed to get powers…
Oops! Shouldn’t have said that.

Looking forward to seeing more, as always.

He’s hairy too.
